Jayne Anne Phillips

Biography

Jayne Anne Phillips was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia, in 1952. She earned a B.A. from the University of West Virginia. After graduating, she travelled to Oakland, California and then to Colorado where she helped found a writers’ workshop. She initially wrote poems and short stories, published by a small press. After enrolling in the University of Iowa writing program and getting an MFA, she wrote the short stories that would become Black Tickets, which achieved critical success. She spent four years writing her first novel, Machine Dreams, which also had considerable success. Since then, however, her reputation dwindled, though her novel Lark and Termite, published in 2009, got quite good reviews.
