Biography

Haruki Murakami was born in Kyoto in 1949. He studied theatre at Waseda University, where he read lots of film scripts. The inspiration for writing his first novel came from watching a baseball game. In 1974 he opened a jazz bar in Tokyo. ノルウェイの森 (Norwegian Wood), which was translated into numerous languages, was his first major success and he is now the best-known contemporary Japanese author in the West.
