Umberto Eco

Biography

Umberto Eco was born in Alessandria in 1932. His father was an accountant. He studied philosophy at the University of Turin and then took a Ph. D. in aesthetics, which he taught at the University of Turin and the Milan Politecnico. He later taught visual communications and semiotics. He published numerous works on these topics and look set for a distinguished though relatively obscure career in this field, when he published Il nome della rosa (The Name of the Rose) which had a massive world-wide success, as did his next novel, Il pendolo di Foucault (Foucault’s Pendulum). His later novels, while successful, have not had the same success. All are typified by considerable erudition, numerous obscure references and sly humour. He died in 2016.
