Eduard Vilde

Biography

Eduard Vilde was born in Pudivere, Väike-Maarja Parish in 1865. His father was an estate manager. He went to school but did not finish his studies nor did he go to university. However, he did learn German. When he sent a story to a newspaper editor, the story was not published but the editor hired Virde as a journalist and later published Virde’s first novel. His early novels were light-hearted and romantic but he soon started writing realistic novels. He started writing for Estonian and German newspapers and then moved to Berlin, before returning to Tartu to continue his journalistic career. After moving to Tallinn, he started writing historical novels. He was later supportive of the 1905 revolution against landlords but when it failed, he went into exile, first to Finland and then to other parts of Europe and the United States, before settling in Copenhagen. At this time, he also started writing drama. After the 1917 Revolution he returned to Estonia. He served as the Estonian ambassador in Berlin before retiring in Tallinn. He died in 1933. His works have become classics of Estonian literature and were hailed by the Soviets as pro-Communist.
