Peter Handke
Biography
Handke has been a controversial writer for most of his career. Firstly he has adopted political opinions, both as regards literature as well as world politics, which have often been considered inflammatory. Secondly, views on his work are decidedly mixed. Some – I am one – consider him the worthy successor of his fellow-countryman Franz Kafka and the other twentieth century writers whose theme is the solitude of man in this world while others consider him an over-rated neurotic bore.
Handke was born in Griffen in 1942, the son of a bank clerk. However, his father was already married to someone else so he was brought up by his mother, A Slovene, and his stepfather, a German army sergeant, from whom he took the name Handke. Handke was educated in a Jesuit seminary and then studied law at the University of Graz, where he became involved with the Grazer Gruppe. His first story was published in their Manuskripte (link in German) magazine. In 1966, he married the actress Libgart Schwarz. They moved first to Düsseldorf, then to Berlin and then to Frankfurt. They separated in 1972 and he and his daughter moved to Paris, whose results can be seen in Die Stunde der wahren Empfindung (A Moment of True Feeling). But before that, he had suffered another tragedy, when, in 1971, his mother committed suicide. His book Wunschloses Unglück (A Sorrow Beyond Dreams: a Life Story) is about that event. He moved back to Salzburg in 1979.
Handke’s first scandal occurred in 1966 at a conference of the Gruppe 47 in Princeton, New Jersey. [The Gruppe 47 was a group of German writers, founded in 1946. Handke had been associated with the group.] Handke attacked the group, he claimed, because of their view that language was an inert medium whereas, for him, language was not just the medium of literature, it was literature. In 1967, at a ceremony for the Gerhart Hauptmann award, Handke arrived late and made critical references in his acceptance speech to the recent acquittal of a police officer charged with manslaughter. His controversial manner has continued, with his pro-Yugoslavia, anti-NATO stand as a result of the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1998-9.
It was not till 1970, with the publication of his novel Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter (The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick) that Handke received real acclaim but, before that time, he had produced a series of successful plays, as well as poetry, radio plays and essays. He continued to produce plays, essays and memoirs but his reputation world-wide now increased with a series of novels, most of which were translated into other major European languages. He has also received numerous literary prizes for his work.
