Ferdinand Oyono

Biography

Ferdinand Oyono was born in Ngoulemakong in 1929. He studied in Paris in the 1950s as well as working as an actor. It was during this period that he wrote his two best-known novels, Vie de boy (UK: Houseboy; US: Boy!) and Vieux nègre et la médaille (The Old Man and the Medal) , both of which reflect the anti-colonialism mood of the period. However, he returned to Cameroon in 1960 and entered the diplomatic service. He spent the rest of his career in the Cameroonian diplomatic service, the Cameroonian government (as minister of culture and minister of foreign affairs) and in the United Nations. He died in 2010.
