Samir Naqqash
Biography
Samir Naqqash was born in Baghdad in 1938 to a wealthy Jewish family. When he was thirteen, his family moved to Israel. After the death of his father some years later, he decided to leave Israel and lived in Turkey, Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, India, and the United Kingdom before returning to Israel. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and received a degree in Arabic literature.
He considered himself an Arab who believed in Judaism and was never comfortable in Israel. He claimed that he was taken there by the Jewish Agency in handcuffs. He claimed that, as a Jew writing in Arabic, he was not read in Israel. He wrote novels, plays and short stories. He died in 2004.
