Zdenek Jirotka

Biography

Zdenek Jirotka, was born in 1911in Ostrava. He was expelled from school in the fifth year and then became a bricklayer. He graduated from construction school and then immediately joined the army. When the Nazis took over, he worked for the Ministry of Public Works but then left to devote himself to writing. He had considerable success with his first work – Saturnin (Saturnin) – and, while he continued to be a successful writerhis first work remained his best known. He once told. a friend that he became a writer in order not to be confused with the hockey player of the same name.

He became an editor and remained one to his retirement in 1971. As well as the novels and short stories, he also wrote radio plays., ccourtroom dramas and the newspaper columns.

He died in 2003
