Axel Gauvin was born in 1944 in Saint-Denis, La Réunion. His father was a planter and his mother a teacher. He studied natural sciences in France at the École Normale Supérieure de Saint-Cloud and afterwards became a teacher. He becomes involved in Réunion political groups, fighting for greater recognition for the Réunion Creole language and for political autonomy for the country. He writes polemical articles and books on the topic and produces short stories, plays and novels in both Creole and French.
