Stella Gaitano

Biography

Stella Gaitano was born in 1979 in Khartoum. Her parents were from what is now South Sudan. She grew up speaking several languages, including Sudanese Arabic and her parents’ native Latuka, a South Sudanese language. She studied pharmacy (in English) at Khartoum University. She started writing stories at an early age. She says that ahe was influenced by theSudanese writerTayeb Salih, as well as by Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende. She lost her Sudanese nationality when South Sudan separated from Sudan. She has lived in Juba but returned to Khartoum after criticising the South Sudanese government. She now lives in Kamen, Germany. Her first novel and some of her stories have been published in English
