John Hearne

Biography

John Hearne was born in 1926 in Montreal to Jamaican parents. They returned to Jamaica when he was two. When he was seventeen, during World War II, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the war he studied education both at the University of Edinburgh and then the University of London. Hearne earned a living teaching, while also writing, primarily in London and Paris, returning to Jamaica in 1962, where he held various teaching positions. He was an adviser to Michael Manley and later wrote extensively for the Jamaican press. Most of his serious writing was done while in Europe, though he wrote three thrillers in collaboration with Morris Cargill when in Jamaica and one more literary novel in 1981. He died in 1994.
