Ricardo Piglia

Biography

Ricardo Piglia was born in Adrogué, Argentina, in 1941 and grew up in Mar de Plata, where he and his family moved after the fall of Perón, whom his father had supported. He studied history at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, and then worked as a publisher, in particular managing a famous series of detective novels. He started writing in the 1950s but did not publish his first work – a collection of short stories – till 1967. He has gone on to write novels, short stories and essays. He lived for a long time in the United States, teaching at various universities, particularly Princeton, but has since returned to Argentina. He contracted ALS and died in 2017.
