Mário de Andrade

Biography

Mário de Andrade was born in 1893 in São Paulo. He was educated at the Conservatory (Conservatório Dramático e Musical) in São Paulo and studied music, intending, initially, to become a concert pianist but finally taking up the profession of music professor. In February 1922 he organised the Modern Art Week with fellow poet, Oswald de Andrade (no relation), which turned out to be the key point of Brazilian modernism, turning Brazilian art away from the old-fashioned styles, not only in literature but also in art and music. He read from his own poetry collection Paulicéia Desvairada (Hallucinated City) and was booed. He was very much in favour in turning to Brazilian roots and encouraged this approach as Director of the Department of Culture of São Paulo. His most famous novel, Macunaíma (Macunaíma), used idiomatic Brazilian speech instead of the more formal style used up to that time. He died in 1945. He is best-known as a poet and much of his reputation in Brazil has come posthumously.
