Marvel Moreno

Biography

Marvel Moreno was born in 1939 in Barranquilla. She was expelled from a convent school for speaking in favour of Charles Darwin and his theories of evolution. She studied at the Economics Faculty of the Universidad del Atlántico, the first woman to do so. She became involved with the Barranquilla Group, a group of writers, artists, journalists, and philosophers whose members included Gabriel García Márquez and Alejandro Obregón, Colombia’s best-known painter. She also met her first husband, Plinio Apuleyo Mendoza, a journalist and artist.

In 1969 she went to Paris to write, then moved to Spain before returning to Paris in 1971 where she remained, marrying a French engineer in 1982. She published a few stories in magazines and also wrote two novels, one of which has been published in English. Her second novel was finished in 1994 but not published till 2020, well after her death from lupus in 1995.
