Reinaldo Arenas

Biography

Reinaldo Arenas was born in 1943 in Holguin, Cuba. As a young man, he allied himself with the Castro revolution against Batista. However, he turned against them, as a result of their repression and, in particular, because of their anti-homosexual stance. He was, in turn, persecuted by the Castro government and accused of sexual deviation. He was imprisoned and tortured. He managed to escape Cuba in 1980 in the Mariel boatlift and went to New York. He continued to write poetry and novels till he killed himself in 1990 after a three year battle with AIDS.
