Augusto Roa Bastos

Biography

Augusto Roa Bastos was born in 1917 in Asunción and grew up in Iturbe, where he learned Guaraní. He received only an elementary education but started a career as a journalist for newspaper in Asunción. He worked as a voluntary medic in the Chaco War. In 1947 he had to leave Paraguay for political reasons and then had to leave Argentina in 1976, going to France, where he taught literature and Guaraní at the University of Toulouse. He returned briefly to Paraguay in 1982 but was stripped of his citizenship (becoming a Spanish citizen). His best known novels – Hijo de hombre (Son of Man) and Yo el Supremo (I, the Supreme) – are about what Roa Bastos calls the monotheism of power and refer specifically to the dictatorship of Dr Francia. He died in 2005.
