Vaddey Ratner was born in 1970 and was five years old when the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia. She and her family suffered under the Khmer Rouge but she and her mother managed to escape, though many of her family died. She came to the United States in 1981, not knowing English but went on to learn the language, graduating from Cornell University with a degree in South East Asian literature and history. She has written two novels.
