Wu Jianren

Biography

Wu Jianren (aka Wu Woyao; Wo Foshan Ren) was born in 1866, in Foshan, Guangdong . His great-grandfather, grandfather and father all worked for the Qing government. After he was born, his family changed its name from Baozhen to Woyao. He went to the local school but when his father died, he lived in poverty. When he was seventeen years old he moved to Shanghai and worked as a a waiter and then a clerk. He later became an editor on a newspaper and then became chief editor. All this time he had been writing and finally published his work in 1902. He wrote poetry, novels and stories. Four of his novels have been published in English. He died in 1910.
