Parijat

Biography

Parijat was born Bishnu Kumari Waiba in 1937 in Darjeeling, India. Her mother died when she was young and she was brought up by her father, a psychologist, and her grandparents. Darjeeling was a big centre of Nepali culture, so she was familiar with it before she moved to Nepal when she was seventeen. She studied in Kathmandu, taking a B.A. However, she had considerable health problems and was paralysed early on, with her sister looking after her. While initially publishing poetry and short stories, she is best known as a novelist. As well as writing, she was also involved in various charitable causes. She died in 1993.
