Manikkuwadumestri (Tissa) Chandrasoma

Biography

Manikkuwadumestri Chandrasoma, known to his friends as Tissa and, as an author, as M. Chandrasoma, was born in Hennatota, Dodanduwa in 1913. His father was a government engineer. He passed the civil service exam and became a civil servant. He worked in various posts in the Ceylonese civil service, before becoming the first Ceylonese national to be appointed Principal Collector of Customs. When some of the port operations were nationalised, without his being consulted, he resigned and went to work for Shell. He later returned to the civil service to run the port and then later returned to the private sector, retiring at sixty. In retirement, he wrote four books, including one novel. He died in 2005.
