Syaman Rapongan

Biography

Syaman Rapongan was born in ,1957, in Imorod, on Orchid island aka Lanyu ( (Pongso no Tao) in the Tao language). He left his native island and moved to Taiwan. In 1980 he started studying French at the University of Tamkang. In 988 he joins the democratic movement which was concerned with the rights of the indigenous people and environmental protest. In 1990 he returned to his island and devoted himself to studying the culture and traditions of the island and he collected songs and legends.

He becomes interested in oceanography and becomes a fisherman and diver. He starts producing books including a collection of tales and a collection of essays as well as personal works concerning the island and oceanography. One of his works has been translated into English while several have been translated into French.
