Ahmet Altan

Biography

Ahmet Altan was born in Ankara in 1950. He worked as both a print and TV journalist and was a university professor of economy and politics. He was fired from one newspaper for writing an alternative history iof Turkey. He co-founded the newspaper Taraf. When he published an article dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, he was charged with denigrating Turkishness. After the 2016 Turkish coup d’état, he and his brother Mehmet were accused of being involved in the plot, They were subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released in 2019 and then rearrested a week later. He has written seven novels and several books of essays.
