Nâzım Hikmet

Biography

Nâzım Hikmet was born Nâzım Hikmet Ran in Salonica in 1902. His father was an Ottoman government official. In 1918, he graduated from the Ottoman Naval School. He briefly served on a cruiser but fell ill and was excused naval service. He and a friend later joined the Turkish war of Independence, where they met Mustafa Kemal. The two friends wrote a poem inspiring the troops and, as a result, they got jobs as teachers. However, they had to leave because of their Communist views. Hikmet was arrested for working on a leftist magazine but he escaped and went to Georgia to witness the Russian Revolution. He studied economics and was influenced by Lenin and other Soviets, including young Soviet poets.

Back in Turkey, he started writing poetry and soon became a leading avant-garde poet, dramatist and scriptwriter. In 1938 , he was sentenced to 28 years and four months’ imprisonment for trying to incite the army to revolt. He was released in an amnesty and finally left Turkey in 1951, living in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. He died in Moscow in 1963. He is considered one of the major Turkish poets and his works have been set to music and translated into many languages. He also wrote two novels.
