Zülfü Livaneli

Biography

Zülfü Livaneli was born Ömer Zülfü Livanelioğlu in Ilgın, Konya in 1946. His father was a judge and later president of the Turkish Supreme Court. He was imprisoned several times during the coup of 1971 because of his political views and had to leave Turkey in 1972 and went into exile, living in Stockholm, Paris, Athens, and New York, before returning to Turkey in 1974.

He has had a very varied career. He is a highly successful musician and wrote many songs, which have had success in Turkey and elsewhere. He is a writer, writing poetry, fiction and essays. He has directed four films. He has also been a political activist and served as a member of the National Assembly.
