Biography

Kastuś Akuła was born in 1925 in Veratsey (near modern-day Dokshytsy). He first trained as a teacher and then as an officer in the German-approved Belarusian Local Defence. He then switched sides and fought against the Nazis with General Anders’ Polish Corps in Italy. He lived briefly in Italy and Britain before emigrating to Canada. In Toronto, he was very much involved in the Belarus community, helping found various organisations concerned with the Belarus community. He wrote several novels in Belarus, which have not been translated, before writing a novel in English. He died in 2008.
