Ivailo Petrov

Biography

Ivailo Petrov (real name: Prodan Petrov Kyuchukov) was born in Bdintzi in 1923. His parents were illiterate peasants. After school, he served in the Bulgarian army, in the parts of Serbia under Bulgarian occupation. When Bulgaria switched sides, he and his colleagues were taken prisoner by the Germans but released soon afterwards. He was then remobilised and sent to fight the Germans in Hungary. After the war, he studied law in Sofia and the graphic arts. He then worked as an editor for several magazines and then in a publishing house. He started writing about rural Bulgaria and had considerable success with Преди да се родя (Before I Was Born) and the long novel Хайка за вълци (Wolf Hunt). He died in 2005.
