Aleksander Majkowski
Biography
Aleksander Majkowski was born in 1876 in Kościerzyna, Kashubia (Poland). His father was a farmer. He attended a German school. He intended to study for the priesthood but, instead, went to the University of Berlin where he studied medicine. He became involved in Polish nationalist activities before finishing his studies, first in Munich and then in Zurich. He returned to Gdańsk where he edited a local newspaper and started writing in Kashubian. He then returned to his native Kościerzyna where he opened a private practice while still being involved in cultural activities. He started publishing in Kashubian, while promoting Kashubian culture. During World War I, he served as a doctor for the German army. After the war, he continued his involvement in Kashubian activities. In the late thirties, he started publishing his major novel, Żëcé i przigodë Remusa. Zvjercadło kaszubskji (Life and Adventures of Remus), started at the end of World War I, as well as starting work on a Kashubian grammar and a history of the Kashubs. He died of a heart attack in 1938. His history and novel were not published till after his death.
