Yuriy Vynnychuk

Biography

Yuriy Vynnychuk was born in 1952 in Stanislav, now Ivano-Frankivsk. He studied at the Ivano-Frankivsk Pedagogical Institute, Faculty of Philology, After university he became a journalist but the KGB were watching him and searched his flat. He moved to Lviv. He worked at various jobs including black market and pimping. After military service he worked in the theatre, both as a playwright and actor, and also in cabaret, he returned to journalism, working for various papers. He published his first collection of poetry in 1990 . He also wrote children’s work and prose for adults. His first novel was published in 1991. He was also know for his literary hoaxes, including a thirteenth century poem on the plundering of Kyiv, written by an Irish poet, which fooled many people. One of his novels and a collection of his stories have been published in English.
