Marie Desplechin

Biography

Marie Desplechin was born in Roubaix in 1959.After school, she worked as a journalist and in a commercial communications department, before becoming writer. She first wrote for young adults and then later for both children/young adults and for adults. Her first work for adults, a collection of stories called Trop sensibles (Taking It to Heart), told the stories of ordinary Parisian women, though her first critical success in adult writing was with her novel, Sans moi (Sans moi), about a divorced women struggling with her job, children and, more particularly, her babysitter, who was a victim of sexual abuse as a girl and is now struggling with drug addiction. She has also written screenplays and a play for the theatre.
