Patrick Süskind

Biography

Patrick Süskind was born in Ambach in 1949. His father was a writer, journalist and translator. He studied history at university first in Munich and then in Aix-en-Provence. It was while in Aix-en-Provence that he collected materials that he would later use in his novel Das Parfum (Perfume). His initial success was with his play Der Kontrabass [The Double Bass], which was originally intended to be a novella. He was also working in television at this time. The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung serialised Das Parfum (Perfume), which became an international best-seller when published in book form the following year. Though he did publish other prose works, he has also worked in television and film since that time. He is a notorious recluse, refusing to give interviews or even to be photographed.
