Ólafur Jóhann Sigurðsson

Biography

Ólafur Jóhann Sigurðsson was born in Hlíð in 1918. His father was a farmer but also a part-time teacher. At age fifteen, he left the farm to go and make his way in Reykjavik, to his father’s disgust. He managed to make his way and published his first collection – a book of children’s stories – in 1934, which had some success. He started associating with left-wing groups and published his first novels by the time he was twenty. This did not have the same success as his stories. He spent some time in Denmark and in the United States, before settling in Reykjavik. He continued to produce poetry, novels and short stories, though his work did not seem influenced by his left-wing views. He died in 1988. His son is the writer Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson (Olaf Olafsson).
