James Joyce

There is not much to say about Joyce that has not been said a thousand times before. If you wish to know more about him as a person or more about his work, check one of the links below or read one of the many books mentioned in the bibliographies. For what it’s worth, I consider him one of the foremost writers of the century and Ulysses to be the best novel of the century. Don’t take my word for it. Read the book. Read about the book. Decide for yourself. There are plenty of people to tell you that he is overrated and inaccessible. He is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea and Ulysses is not an easy read. But whether you like him or not, his influence will remain and no-one who is interested in modern literature – and, if you are not, you should not be at this site – can afford not to read and study his work.

Books about James Joyce

There are probably well over a thousand books about Joyce. Check the bibliographies below for a few. The standard biography is Richard Ellmann: James Joyce; for a good introduction to Joyce’s work Anthony Burgess’ Here Comes Everybody is pretty good. Stuart Gilbert’s now outdated book on Ulysses is still worth reading.
