Anna Banti

Biography

Anna Banti was born in Florence in 1895 as Lucia Lopestri. The family moved to Rome where she met the historian and art critic Roberto Longhi who was her teacher and, later, her husband. She graduated in art history with a thesis on the art writer Marco Boschini. Longhi and Banti founded an art and literary magazine, called Paragone, for which she was the literary editor. Her initial writings were as an art critic and it is only later that she started writing stories and novels. Her main theme was on the role of women in society. She died in 1985.
