Giorgio Manganelli

Biography

Only two of Manganelli’s works of fiction are available in English, not surprisingly, and both published after his death by a small American publisher. Compare this with German – a much smaller market – where most of his works have been published by Klaus Wagenbach (who has also published other Italian authors not available in English). Of course, even well-read English mother tongue readers can probably only name three post-World War II Italian authors: Calvino, Eco and Moravia. And, no, I am not forgetting Pasolini but he is probably known more for his films than for his novels. Of course, Manganelli is experimental and experimental doesn’t sell (though you could say that Calvino is experimental). Though perhaps he should be read more, I do admit that I have struggled mightily with his work, much of which I have found unreadable and incomprehensible. But that is undoubtedly my fault.

Giorgio Manganelli was born in Milan in 1922. He graduated from the University of Pavia in political science. He worked most of his life as a teacher, including teaching English literature at the University of Rome. He was involved with many magazines, particularly those of an experimental nature but did not publish his first book till he was 42. His novels were generally experimental in nature. As well as writing novels and literary criticism, he also translated many works from English into Italian, particularly Edgar Allen Poe. He died in 1990.
