Antonio Tabucchi

Biography

Antonio Tabucchi was born in Pisa in 1943 but moved to his maternal grandparents’ home in nearby Vecchiano when he was only a few days old. He went to school in Vecchiano and Pisa but traveled a lot, particularly to Paris and Lisbon. He became very much interested in Portuguese surrealism and, in particular, in the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. He studied at university in Pisa and then taught Portuguese language and literature in Bologna. After publishing works influenced by Portuguese surrealism, he published his first novel in 1975 and then took up a teaching post in Genoa. His novel Sostiene Pereira (UK: Declares Pereira; US: Pereira Declares) has been extensively translated. As well as translating Pessoa into Italian he has also translated the Brazilian poet Carlo Drummond de Andrade. He died in 2012.
