Johan Bojer
Biography
Johan Bojer was born Johan Kristoffer Hansen in 1872 in the village of Ørkedalsøren, now the town of Orkanger, Sør-Trøndelag county. His parents were not married. He grew up as a foster child with a poor family near Trondheim, After his father died in 1894, he took his surname. He initially worked on a farm and as a bookkeeper. However he started publishing when still quite young and had success early. His reputation spread and many of his books were translated, including many into English. He was nominated five times for theNobel Prize. In 1923, he travelled to Litchville, North Dakota, to research the lives of the Norwegian immigrants who had settled there and later wrote a book about them. He died in 1959.
