Literatura de los hijos [Literature of the Children]

As used in Chile (and elsewhere in Latin America) this refers to novels, memoirs, etc. written by those who were children in the period of the dictatorship (the Pinochet dictatorship, in the case of Chile) and therefore grew up in the 1970s. The books that they have written about that period are often seen through the eyes of children, as they were. Instead of experiencing the innocence of childhood, they experienced repression, cruelty, violence and even torture, as well as the disappearance of their parents and other adults. The term was coined by Alejandro Zambra in his book Formas de volver a casa (Ways of Going Home).

Writers included in this category, as well as Zambra, are Álvaro Bisama, Alejandra Costamagna, Nona Fernández, Rafael Gumucio, Patricio Jara, Carlos Labbé, Marcelo Leonart, Leonardo Sanhueza and Diego Zúñiga
