V. Y. Mudimbe
Biography
Valentin-Yves (later Vumbi-Yoka) Mudimbe was born in Jadotville (now Likasi) in the Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1941. He started training to be a priest at a Benedictine monastery but left the country to escape Mobutu. After studying in Kinshasa, he went on to study in Paris, Besançon and Louvain, Belgium. He has taught at universities in Paris, the United States and the United Kingdom. Much of his recent work is in English and focuses on issues concerning culture, language, philosophy and phenomenology, particularly as relates to Africa.
