Cristina Rivera-Garza

Biography

Cristina Rivera-Garza was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, in 1964. She studied urban sociology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and then took a doctorate in Latin American history from the University of Houston. Her doctoral thesis was on psychiatry and mental illness in Mexico and she has written articles on this topic. She has taught at various institutions in Mexico and the United States. She has written novels, short stories, non-fiction, poetry and an opera libretto, as well as translating between Spanish and English.
