Miklós Szentkuthy
Biography
Miklós Szentkuthy was born Miklós Pfisterer in Budapest in 1908. His father was a judge. The family had been well-to do but had fallen on hard times. Szentkuthy studied English and French at university and even spent some time in London on a scholarship. He worked as a teacher and translator from English, including Swift, Dickens and Joyce. He wrote his first book when he was eighteen, though it was not published till after his death. His first novel to be published – Prae – was published when he was twenty-six. He went to on to publish many more novels, which have only recently started to be published in English. His St. Orpheus’s Breviary cycle of novels is considered one of the great works of European literature. He had to suspend work on this during the Communist era and wrote a series of biographical novels of the great composers. He resumed work on St. Orpheus’s Breviary in 1972 but it was unfinished at his death in 1988.
