Lyudmila Petrushevskaya
Biography
Lyudmila Petrushevskaya was born in 1938 in Moscow. She lived in the Metropol Hotel with her family until 1941, when her father, a Bolshevik intellectual, was declared an enemy of the state. He had been a philosopher, concerned with the problems of Marxist-Leninist ethics and scientific atheism. During the war, she lived with relatives, as well as in an orphanage near Ufa. After the war, she returned to Moscow and graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University. She worked as a correspondent for various Moscow newspapers,for several publishing houses, and, since 1972 as an editor at the Central Television Studio.
She started writing poetry and plays and some of her plays were performed by amateur companies. She continued writing plays and also wrote stories though it was often difficult to get them published as they were critical of the Soviet Union. Her works were published after the fall of the Soviet Union but she remained critical of the system and condemned the war in Chechnya and signed a letter in support of protests in Belarus. In 2022, she condemned Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and called Putin the main criminal.
She has apparently written some three thousand stories in various genres, as well as plays, poetry, essays and novels.
