Terenci Moix

Biography

Terenci Moix was born Ramón Moix Meseguer in Barcelona in 1942. He left school at the age of fourteen and travelled around Europe. He discovered 1960s pop culture, particularly the cinema, but also had wide interests, all of which was self-taught. On return to Barcelona, he was openly gay (which was then illegal in Spain). He wrote a couple of thrillers under the pseudonym of Ray Sorel. Initially, he wrote primarily in Catalan but then started writing in Spanish as well, which Catalans saw as a betrayal. He had huge success with his novel No digas que fue un sueño [Don’t Say It Was A Dream], based on the Anthony and Cleopatra story and then wrote four more novels about ancient Egypt. He went onto to write numerous works, including novels, stories and non-fiction, including several works on the cinema. For a while he was a television presenter. His books are often autobiographical, deal with Catalan culture and homosexuality and were critical of the values of the Franco regime. He died in 2003. None of his books has been published in English. His sister was the novelist Ana María Moix.
