György Spiró

Biography

György Spiró was born in Budapest in 1946. His father was a engineer and his mother an actress.He studied Hungarian and Serbo-Croat at the Eötvös Loránd University and then became a trainee for foreign journalism with Hungarian radio. He graduated from the College of Journalism in 1972 with a degree in journalism and sociology. He then worked as an editor for Corvina. He teaches at the Department of World Literature of Eötvös Loránd University, and from 1992 at the Department of Aesthetics. he has also been very much involved in drama, writing plays, working as a theatre manager and teaching drama. As well as plays he has written novels, stories and non-fiction. Only one of his novels and two of his plays have been translated into English. He learned Polish and became an expert on Polish culture and translated Witold Gombrowicz into Hungarian. One of hisbest known works was set entirely in Poland.
